Computer Frustrations

I'm here in Seoul. Arrived Saturday instead of Friday after some weather-related delays. I have a lot to say on that -- and some pictures, but have had computer difficulties since my arrival. When (she says optimistically) those are resolved, I will be updating this about my travels, arrival, and settling in.

A lot of time during these first days has involved trying to figure out my computer communication. My room does not have wireless access as I had expected it would, and my computer, at the moment, is not equipped for a wired system (am working on trying to get the necessary equipment for it -- difficult in a new place where one doesn't speak the language). An attempt to use my computer with the wireless service available at a nearby coffee shop failed because, apparently, foreigners must be registered with the government in order to use wireless in Korea. Yet it is completely unclear how one gets such a registration number and appears that it may be available only to those in Korea for more than 90 days (on other than a tourist visa) which would leave people like me without access. I am befuddled.

There is a computer available in the lobby of the Ramada, my home here in Korea, which I have been able to use for e-mail but up until this evening I couldn't post anything on my blog because all the instructions appeared in Greek (or maybe it was Russian). I am NOT kidding. . . . I decided to give it a try again, and this time was successful in having English appear so I am able to write this note. Can't upload any pictures, of course, but at least I can let people know that I'm here and that, with luck, blog entries will proceed. If nothing gets posted, assume the computer difficulties have not been resolved.

Until then, keep in touch via e-mail which I can receive when the computer in the lobby is available
.
